What BMW keys are like
BMW has cycled through three basic key setups over the years. Older models, up through the mid-2000s or so, used a metal key with a small chip hidden in the plastic head. The chip talks to the car before it'll start.
Then came the slot fob. On a lot of 2006-2013 BMWs there's no blade to turn at all. You push the whole fob into a dash slot and press start.
Newer BMWs went full smart key. The fob stays in your pocket and the car starts with a button. Behind each generation sits a smarter immobilizer computer, and each one is harder to program than the last, which is why we ask for your exact year over the phone.

For any all-keys-lost job we'll ask for your ID and proof of ownership, like the registration or title. That's a good thing. It means nobody can get a key made to your car but you.

When the dealer is the right call
Straight talk: BMW locks its keys down harder than almost anyone. We handle plenty of older and mid-2010s models right at the car, but some of the newest BMWs use security only the dealer can touch.

Common questions
How long does it take to program a BMW key?
Plan on about 20 to 45 minutes at the car for most spares and fobs once we start. Older transponder keys land on the quick end. All-keys-lost jobs on a BMW run longer, sometimes over an hour, because we're building trust with the immobilizer from scratch.
Can you program a used BMW key fob?
Usually not. Most BMW fobs lock themselves to the first car they're programmed to, so that cheap used fob online generally can't be moved to your vehicle. Text us the year and model before you buy one and we'll tell you if yours is an exception.
Are you cheaper than the BMW dealer?

Which BMWs can you not make keys for?
The very newest ones, mostly. BMW's latest security is locked down tight enough that some recent model years are dealer-only, and that's true for every locksmith, not just us.
