What kind of key does your Chevy use?
It depends on the year. A '90s Camaro or Impala SS might use a VATS key, the metal blade with a small black resistor pellet set into it. Those still show up around Jacksonville, usually on a garage-kept classic that only comes out on weekends.
Most Chevys from the late '90s through the early 2010s use a transponder key instead. A chip hides in the plastic head, and the engine won't start unless the ignition recognizes that chip. A plain hardware-store copy will turn the lock but never fire the motor.

When the dealer makes sense
Honest answer: rarely, but sometimes. A few of the newest, hardest-to-crack GM models can only be programmed with dealer tooling, and if yours is one of them we'll say so on the phone instead of eating half your day.
For nearly every Chevy in the tables on this page, we handle the job on-site. The dealer route usually costs more for the key and means getting the car there first. If your Tahoe won't start in a beach parking lot, that's a tow bill before anyone's touched a key.

Common questions
How long does programming take on a Chevy?
Usually 10 to 20 minutes once the new key is cut. Most GM programming runs through the OBD port and goes quickly. All-keys-lost jobs take longer, often 45 minutes to an hour, because we have to pull key data from the vehicle before we can cut anything.
Can you program a used Chevy fob I bought online?
Sometimes, but be careful. Many newer GM smart fobs lock to the first vehicle they're paired with and can't be reused, so a used fob off eBay may be a paperweight. Text us the year and model before you buy and we'll tell you straight. Either way, fob programming starts at $150.
Is a locksmith better than the dealer for a Chevy key?
For most Chevys, yes, the mobile route is simpler. The dealer typically needs the car brought in, which can mean a tow bill when you have no working key. We come to you, usually the same day. A few of the very newest models are dealer-only, though, and we'll tell you that up front instead of taking the job.
Do you make VATS keys for older Chevys?
Yes. Those '90s GM classics use a resistor pellet in the blade, and the car won't start unless the pellet value matches. We can measure yours and cut a working copy right there in the driveway. If all keys are gone, it's still doable, it just takes longer.
