What GMC keys are like
GMC has used three basic key setups over the years, and the year of your truck tells us most of what we need to know. Older models, roughly the late '90s through the early 2010s, use a transponder key. That's a metal key with a small chip in the plastic head, and the engine won't start unless it reads that chip.
Mid-2010s trucks mostly moved to flip keys and remote-head keys. Blade, chip and lock buttons all live in one unit.

Common questions
How long does programming a GMC key take?
Most GMC keys and fobs program in 10 to 20 minutes once we're at the truck. Older transponder keys are quick. Some newer push-to-start models force a security wait built into the vehicle, so those can run half an hour or more. Still faster than a tow to the dealer.
Can you program a used GMC fob I bought online?
