What kind of key does your Honda use?

Almost every Honda on the road since the mid-2000s has a chip hidden in the key. It's called a transponder. The car reads that chip when you turn the ignition, and if it's wrong or missing, the engine won't start no matter how well the blade fits.

That's why a cheap hardware-store copy will open your Civic's door but leave you sitting in the driveway. The chip has to be programmed to your specific car.

Newer Hondas went a step further. Most Accords from 2018 on, and a lot of Civics, CR-Vs and Pilots from around 2016-2017, use a smart proximity fob with push-button start. Keep it in your pocket and press the button. Great, right up until it's lost.

What we do at your car

For the last four years we've run this business fully mobile. There's no shop to visit because the shop drives to you. Our vans carry Honda-compatible key blanks, fob stock, a cutting machine and the programming gear the immobilizer needs.

You call, we confirm the price, then a locksmith heads your way. Most calls inside Jacksonville see us in roughly 30 to 60 minutes, though I-95 at rush hour can stretch that. We've cut keys in Riverside driveways, in Town Center parking lots and in an office garage off Butler Blvd.

Once the new key is cut, we program the chip and the remote buttons, then start the car a few times to prove it works. You watch the whole job from your own curb.

Spare key vs. all keys lost

A spare Honda key runs from $150, cut and programmed. If you still have one working key, this is the cheap, easy version of the job and probably the best money you'll spend on that car all year. Lose your only key later and the same errand starts at $195 instead.

All keys lost starts at $195. We build a key from scratch, which takes more equipment time, and we'll ask for your ID plus proof of ownership, like the registration or title, before we cut. That check protects you. Nobody should be able to order a key to your Accord except you.

Either way, the exact quote gets confirmed on the phone before we drive out. It depends on the vehicle, the year, the key type and where you are. No hidden fees.

When the dealer makes more sense

Straight talk: we're independent locksmiths, not affiliated with Honda, and we handle most models sold in the US, from an older Fit with a basic transponder key to a push-to-start Pilot. A handful of the very newest, most sealed-up vehicles will only take keys through the dealer's own system.

If your Honda is one of them, we'll say so on the phone instead of charging you to find out. A dealer visit usually means towing the car in and waiting on parts. When we can do the job, you skip all of that.

Not sure which bucket your car falls in? Call or text (904) 902-4771 with the year and model, and you'll have an answer in about a minute.

Common questions

How long does it take to program a Honda key?

Usually 10 to 20 minutes once we're at your car, on top of cutting the blade. Older transponder keys for a Civic or Accord program quickly. Smart fobs on newer models can take a bit longer, and all-keys-lost jobs run longer still. Most spare-key visits wrap up inside an hour.

Can you program a used Honda fob I bought online?

Sometimes, but don't count on it. Plenty of Honda smart fobs lock to the first vehicle they're married to and can't be reused. Some older remote head keys will take a reflash. Text us the part number before you buy and we'll tell you whether it has a shot. Fobs we supply come with programming built into the price.

Are you cheaper than the Honda dealer?

Usually, yes, and faster too. The dealer generally needs the car towed to them and may wait days on a key, while we come to you with spares starting at $150. For a small number of the newest models the dealer really is the only option, and we'll tell you that up front on the phone.

What do you need from me for an all-keys-lost job?

A photo ID plus proof the car is yours — registration or title. We check those before cutting a key from scratch, and that's for your protection. It means nobody can call us and order a key to your CR-V without proving the car is theirs. Having the VIN handy speeds things up too.
